Tristant Vineyards Terroir: Sutter Sandy Loam Soil
EXTRAORDINARY SOIL MAKES FOR EXTRAORDINARY WINES
In the spring of 1977, I hired a backhoe contractor to dig test holes for soil analysis. It was like striking gold in the Yukon of Alaska! We discovered three to four feet of Sutter sandy loam topsoil and 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches of white grey gravel beyond. In this soil, the grape roots would reach very deep in search of moisture, enabling the vines to achieve maximum health and maturity. The plants would also enjoy the kind of drainage that is so critical for producing high-quality fruit.
As the U.S. Geological soil map above shows, few locations in the region share the unique soil properties of Tristant Vineyards.
